Disconnected - Brief

Scene 1
Location: Departure Lounge, Airport
Description: Over shoulder to long shot, brother walks past camera and down the hall way, towards the plane (seen through window).
The first scene to the video will interest the audience as it will not show the brothers face or where he is heading. Starting the video of in a bit of mystery.

Scene 2
Location: Empty dark room
Description: Close up of Jazz's fingers starting to play piano, handheld with steady cam.
This shot will create the style of multi-strand, will also show that she is singing about the person in the first scene. The location being dark, and Jazz being surrounded in the darkness will show its a sad song for her.

Scene 3
Location: Army Base Camp
Description: Establishing shot, Brother (centered) and other soldiers facing camera saluting.
This shot will tell the audience the brother was shipped out to a war zone and the salute will ensure the audience he is in the armed forces.

Scene 4
Location: Empty Dark Room
Description: Long shot, Jazz continues to play piano.
This shot will show how dark it is and how dark it is around her, will represent that her life is surrounded by darkness because of her brother possibly.

Scene 5
Location: Long/Establishing
Description: Brother is running across screen, running away from war zone (shown by explosion and death in background)
This shot will be filmed on steady cam, would replicate the war zone as it may be partly shaky.

Scene 6
Location: Empty Dark Room
Description: Close up, Jazz's face will show a tear running down it as she stops playing the piano.
This shot will create a cliffhanger because it doesn't show if the brother survived or not, it just shows Jazz is upset about the whole thing.

Visualization

"Disconnected" by Jazz Morley
I feel this song would fit a performance/narrative music video, this is because it would show her feelings whilst performing and give a clearer understanding to what the song is actually about. For the narrative I think images of war focussing on one solider would be appropriate, I think that would work because the song is actually about her brother who was shipped out to fight in Afghanistan. For the performance part of the video, it would be her playing on a piano, it would show the song is about her feelings and also would show her emotions by focussing on her. This music video would show a story line, it could show how and why her brother had to leave and what his life was like in a war zone. The clips of the war zone could represent her mixed feelings towards her brother leaving, for example it would show calm times of the war and harsh times. For the Brother/narrative style of the music video it would start with him leaving the UK shown by scenes in a airport and saying goodbye to family. It would then show him relaxing and having fun with other soldiers in the army base. The end scene would show a battle, the Brother would be hiding behind some sort of cover. Close ups on his reaction, shows he is scared like her sister.

Assignment 2, Task 1 Initial Listen

What sort of mood and tone is conveyed?
The song has a slow pace to it, it makes it feel as if it is sad. The songs only instrument apart from the vocals is the piano, the piano can be associated with a slow pace and a sad mood. This song is actually about her brother being sent of and fighting in Afghanistan.

Does it sound similar to anything else you have heard?
Both songs have a slow pace and a sad meaning to it. Also they both use the piano as the main instrument apart from vocals.

What genre would you describe the track as?
I would describe this song as a acoustic genre because it uses the piano to set the mood of the song.

Analysis Sound Powerpoint Evaluation

Overall I feel mine and Amy's power point was a success. One reason for this is that we covered most of the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. We also went into details when we highlighted these sounds; these details included suggested meanings and thoughts of actors. Another example would be that we talked about how the music affects the mood and tone, which then in turn created the feel to the lost series and set the scene for the characters and locations.
I feel we used the terms from the glossy well; we used almost all of them to analysis the sound from lost. We gave examples for each term.
I feel the main reason our power point went well was because Amy and me are huge fans of the lost series; this meant we were interested in the show and how sounds affects us as an audience. The clip we used was also a success because it was one of the main scenes from lost and it had great non-diegetic and diegetic sound to analysis.
Before looking into the sound of lost in would not of noticed half of it, now I can see how much sound affects the audience and how much sound there actually is in a five-minute clip. I have realized how important sound is for a successful TV show.
If I could do this presentation again I would give definitions for each term we used, this is so people would have a further understand of what we were presenting. Also I would of got Amy and me to rehearse to make sure we knew what we were going to say and to make it seem more fluent.

Coldplay's "The Scientist", Mood and Tone

I personally believe that the song is about a man who has just made a major mistake and therefore caused the end of his relationship with his girlfriend. He trying to figure out what went wrong, but is over-analyzing the situation and not necessarily relying on his gut instinct. He wants everything to go back to what it once was so that he can undo the mistakes he made and revive the relationship.
The video shows his want for things to be the way they were, this is shown by the whole of the video being in reverse and eventually ending up at the incident that ended the relationship.
Lyrics from the song are shown in the video, for example "go back to the start", this is shown by the video being in reverse and he eventually ends up at the start of when it went wrong. Another example would be, "Running in Circles, chasing our tails", This is shown by him wondering around, he wondered through many different almost pointless location, e.g. a forest as it does not relate to the song which then shows he is lost in his sadness.
